This may surprise you, but the things people post on social media are not always truthful; It really blew your mind, didn't it? Because of this, it can be difficult for people to know what is real without context or experience in a specific area. That's part of the reason why many platforms use a fact-checking team to police (often more like policing) what is shared. Now, Threads is getting its own fact-checking program, Adam Mosseri, head of instagram and de facto head of Threads, Announced. He first shared the company's plans to do so in December.
Mosseri stated that Threads “recently” made Meta's third-party fact-checkers able to review and rate any inaccurate content on the platform. Before the change, Meta performed fact checks on facebook and instagram and then compared “nearly identical fake content” that users shared on Threads. However, there is no indication of exactly when the program began or if it is global.
Then there is the question of seeing how effective it can really be. facebook and instagram already had these dedicated fact-checkers, but misinformation has proliferated across all platforms. Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, and as elections and conflicts unfold around the world, is it too much to ask for extensive data verification by social media companies?
