T-Mobile has completed its acquisition of Mint Mobile, the carrier partially owned by Ryan Reynolds. In an update on wednesdayT-Mobile says Mint Mobile will continue to offer its $15 per month/5GB data plan (which requires paying three months in advance), while also offering access to some of the T-Mobile benefits rolling out now and “in the coming months.”
The acquisition also includes Ka'ena Corporation, the parent company of Mint Mobile, along with the other two companies under its umbrella: prepaid brand Ultra Mobile and wholesale wireless provider Plum. Both Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile customers will get T-Mobile's scam call detection service as part of the merger.
Plus, Mint and Ultra customers will get free roaming in Canada, including unlimited talk and text, as well as 3GB of data. Ultra customers will also gain access to an enhanced data roaming option while in Mexico.
T-Mobile announced plans to acquire Mint Mobile for up to $1.35 billion last March, and the Federal Communications Commission finally approved the agreement last month. Mint founders David Glickman and Rizwan Kassim will join the T-Mobile team to help lead the brands, while Reynolds will continue to serve as a Mint ambassador. The deal gives T-Mobile a chance to dip back into the prepaid phone market, an opportunity it missed after selling Boost Mobile.
