Google Photos seems to be broken for many users after the latest iOS 16.3.1 update from Apple. Several Edge staff members as well as people in Twitterreports that the app crashes on launch, making it impossible to access or manage your Google Photos library.
Although the problem is not universal, to few people, myself included, say they can open Google Photos with no problem; the blocking still appears to be relatively widespread. Other Google apps like Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Maps seem to work just fine.
It is currently unclear what could be causing the problem and why it only affects certain people. The iOS update (which may or may not have triggered the problem) is supposedly relatively minor; Apple’s release notes say it’s primarily intended to fix bugs and some security issues.
Google is aware of the issue and is “in the process of rolling out a fix in version 6.23.1 of the Google Photos app,” according to Michael Marconi, a company spokesman.
