He also led several strategies to help close racial and economic achievement gaps in Washington State's education system, as well as to support the growth and sustainability of the state's public charter school sector.
He is the former CEO of Chicago Public Schools. Prior to his appointment to Chicago, he was Superintendent of Schools for the School District of Rochester, New York. Under Mr. Brizard's leadership, both Chicago Public Schools and the Rochester City School District saw substantial improvements in student achievement. Mr. Brizard's experience also includes a 21-year career as an educator and administrator at the New York City Department of Education.
He served as Regional Superintendent, overseeing more than 100 schools in the Brooklyn district and also served as the system's Chief Executive Officer for its 400 high schools. He is a Broad Center Fellow, a Pahara-Aspen Institute Fellow, and a member of the Aspen Institute Global Leadership Network.
