I think Sunday mornings are for lazy breakfasts and good reading in bed, unless it’s a beautiful spring day. But if you, like me, are new to springs in England, you’ll want to keep an eye on the weather forecast. In the last two weeks, I have seen snow, heavy rain, wind, warm sunny days and everything in between. And I, fooled by the daffodils and cherry blossoms, came this close to putting my winter clothes away. If you’re lucky enough to have a warm sunny day (unlike me), read outside. While I can’t promise you a great read, I do guarantee something to ponder, something inspiring, or maybe even a shred of hope.

welcome to NFTs driving change—a monthly column (formerly bi-monthly), where I highlight projects and creators using NFTs and other Web3 tools to create real-world impact. In this issue, I’ll introduce you to Dropspot, a curated NFT arts and culture marketplace, and their International Women’s Day campaign celebrating female NFT creators.

Meet Dropspot, the new kid on the block

Dropspot is a new curated NFT arts and culture marketplace based on the Cardano blockchain. The market focuses on 1:1 NFTs and claims to allow its artists to have “artistic sovereignty”. In other words, artists will have full control over their work. In addition, Dropspot offers a creator launch pad to help creators mint and sell their NFTs globally. However, this feature is currently invite-only.

According to Laura Richardson, co-owner, Dropspot’s director of curation, community and communications, the platform has a highly experienced team. Richardson, for example, has more than 20 years of experience in the creative industry. Past clientele of hers include Soho House, Conde Nast, Google, and Facebook, to name a few.

“We can simply no longer rest on our ‘build it and they will come’ laurels; those days are over,” Richardson told NFT Evening. “People want and deserve meaning, and one of my greatest passions (and gifts) is creating community-centered narratives. Dropspot is the platform I use to bring togetherness back into our lives.”

#NFTLikeAQueen spotlights female NFT creators

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Dropspot launched the #NFTLikeAQueen campaign on March 8. Created in partnership with the Genius X Accelerator program and Cardano Women, the campaign highlights some of the leading and emerging female NFT creators from around the world. Some of the participating artists include Kika Nicolela, Haze Long, Alice Labrouel, Tina Touli, Emily Carrig and Anna Dora.

More importantly, all Dropspot commissions from the sale of NFTs will go to the Malala Fund. These funds will help girls in developing countries to access higher education.

“I came from a traditional fine art background and was disillusioned by the elitism of the art world,” Emily Carrig said. “I found the NFT space refreshing because it encourages collaboration, community, and co-creation. My goal is to help other women and emerging creators to enter the space and overcome the challenges that I went through.

Echoing this, Long added: “One of my main goals in this space is to make more connections with women and encourage them. My art was discovered and popularized by women. I’d like to return the favor.

one last word

With March being Women’s History Month, it is common to have a large number of web3 companies and projects launching various campaigns encouraging female-identifying NFT creators. In an ideal world, I would like Web3 to do a lot more to be inclusive, not just have a one-day or one-month campaign focused on women and then fall back on old habits. But since we don’t live in an ideal world, I’ll take the small victories for now.

Hopefully, we’ll see a lot more female artists and female-run companies like Dropsot in the near future. Also, we will have more companies and projects doing more to make Web3 a diverse and inclusive space; not just during Women’s History Month.
