Everyone is getting into gaming nowadays. YouTube joins the growing list of companies with gaming initiatives. launching their playables program on mobile and desktop devices. To play, simply visit the YouTube website or Android/iOS app and search for Playable in the sidebar. YouTube will allow players to save their progress and track high scores. There are over 75 games to choose from, from chess games and crossword puzzles to more popular casual mobile titles like Angry Birds Showdown!, trivia crackand Cut the rope.
YouTube began its foray into gaming last year, offering Playables to YouTube Premium subscribers. That initial phase had far fewer games and only lasted a relatively limited period of time, with the phase concluding in March of this year.
Offering a variety of casual games has become one of the most popular ways technology companies use to attract or retain subscribers. LinkedIn recently launched its offering of games that are apparently quite entertaining. The New York Times, Hearst and even Netflix have added games as part of their regular services. Even YouTube's parent company Google tried its hand at gaming in 2019 with cloud gaming subscription service Google Stadia. After just over three years, Google shut down Stadia in 2023.
