Uber has signed up another robotaxi company to offer driverless rides within its app. Starting next year, for “qualifying” rides, Uber will offer the option to take the ride in one of Cruise’s autonomous vehicles. The two companies announced a “multi-year strategic partnership” Thursday.
Cruise suspended its robotaxi service in October following an incident in which a Cruise car dragged a pedestrian. The company recently put autonomous vehicles back on the road with safety drivers. Cruise spokesperson Tiffany Testo tells us The edge that the launch of its partnership with Uber will occur after Cruise brings back its self-driving ride service.
In their press release, Uber and Cruise didn't say which cities the service might be available in, but Testo says users can “expect” it to launch in one of the cities where supervised testing is underway: Phoenix, Dallas and Houston.
