Twitter users around the world reported that they could no longer post or message each other on Wednesday, the latest in a series of glitches at the Elon Musk-owned social media service.
The problems began around 4:45 p.m. ET on Wednesday, when users trying to post saw a notification saying they were “over the daily limit for sending tweets.” Others found they couldn’t follow new accounts, and some signed out of their accounts entirely. Direct messages and the GIF search function also stopped working.
Downdetector, a service that collects user reports on outages, also said Twitter was experiencing problems. At 7 pm ET, some users started tweeting again as features were partially restored.
The cause of the failures was not clear. Twitter, at least, seemed to be able to tweet.
“Twitter may not be working as expected for some of you,” the company said. aware. “Sorry for the inconvenience.”
The company and Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Twitter has undergone significant changes since Musk bought the company in October. The billionaire has laid off or laid off more than half of Twitter’s staff, leaving the company with about 2,200 employees, up from 7,500 at the time of the acquisition. Musk has also aggressively cut other costs and proposed new ways for the company to earn revenue.
The changes have caused confusion and occasional breakdowns in your service. Twitter users experienced outages in late December after the company shut down operations at one of its main data centers in Sacramento. That outage, which lasted several hours, mainly affected people using the app on desktop computers, logging out or displaying error messages when trying to scroll through their Twitter feeds.
Last month, users in Australia and New Zealand also reported Twitter outages that lasted for more than half a day.
On Wednesday, users responded to the threads with disbelief and humor. Some asked if the social networking site they chose was really broken. Others speculated as to what might have caused the failures.
Some found ways to use the site despite problems using Twitter’s scheduling feature, which allowed them to post messages on the site. That led to numerous jokes, since Twitter is known for its real-time nature and not premeditated posts.
