Can you feel it? There's a slight chill in the air, the sun retreats earlier, and the leaves begin to change (at least in my Midwestern town). We are entering the time of year when everyone starts publishing the vampire kermit the frog meme to show how ready they are for Halloween. I'm even starting to notice the Shudder resubscribe button.
October has its own vibe at the movies, and this month's theatrical releases include Operation blood hunt, a film about 1944 special forces fighting werewolves in the Pacific theater, and seven cemeteriesa movie starring Danny Trejo about a guy who hires a witch to resurrect his group and save a woman's ranch. And let's not forget Rumors, which I am very excited about.
So I've got a couple of horror movie trailers from this week for you to check out below, along with two streaming series. Enjoy!
1922 Nosferatu: a symphony of terror was a Dracula movie in all but name. So much so that the heirs of Bram Stoker obtained a court order destroy copies of the film, but some copies survived. Now, more than 100 years after its launch, Nosferatu will have a new version starring Bill Skarsgård as the vampire Count Orlok, also known as Nosferatu. Lily Rose-Depp and Willem Dafoe also star.
The most recent trailer does a great job of creating the atmosphere of terror that the townspeople feel towards Count Orlok, but Focus Features has yet to show us Orlok himself. Nosferatu hits theaters on December 25.
Buddy
I don't know what the hell is going on with Warner Bros.' Buddy. The preview of this film directed by Drew Hancock begins with a lie that makes you think it is a love story. It then quickly turns into what seems like a thriller about a woman (Sophie Thatcher) held captive by a man (Jack Quaid).
I think that's a hoax too. There's a strange moment, at the end of the trailer, where Thatcher's character holds an unwavering hand over a candle until her arm catches fire. She's crying, so she's clearly in pain, but the movie's rating is a science fiction thriller — makes me wonder what's going on underneath.
I was hoping that by texting the number in the description on the trailer's YouTube page, I could get a little more. This is a “Find Your Partner Today” quiz that includes a selfie request. I got this at the end:
That didn't answer any questions for me, but at least now I'll get marketing text messages. Anyway, Buddy hits theaters on January 10 next year.
Three years after the first successful season of Squid Game ended and spawned a spin-off reality show, the Netflix show returns for its second season on December 26. A new sneak peek this week showed Gong Yoo's salesman getting ready for work (and probably getting some slaps). It ends with him speaking directly to the camera and asking, “Sir, would you like to play a game with me?”
The franchise, HBO's new series, which follows the making of a fictional comic-book-style film, seems like a delightful takedown of Hollywood's current superhero obsession. It is written by Jon Brown, who also wrote Successionand stars Himesh Patel and Lolly Adefope as Daniel and Dag, two production workers on the film. Daniel Brühl is also there: a bit of a funny casting, given his role as Zemo in multiple Marvel productions. The franchise begins airing tonight at 10 pm ET on Max.
