The Beatles have released another song, their first since 1995. “Now and Then” is billed as the final Track from the Beatles, given that two of the members have died and the other two are over 80 years old. But of course, millionaires love money.
The song emerged from a John Lennon demo track dating from the 1970s and a 1995 guitar track by George Harrison. The surviving Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, finished the tune using machine learning technology. The song was due to come out in 1995, along with “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love”, two other songs taken from old Lennon demos. However, the technology simply wasn’t there to bring out the vocals without degrading the audio quality.
With the same software director that Peter Jackson used to Return documentary for Apple, the team separated Lennon’s voice from the piano without any audio bleed, allowing the remaining Beatles to turn it into a full ballad. The guitar solo is Harrison-style, but he doesn’t actually play it; he does play some rhythm guitar in the background.
