Tamagotchi comes from the Japanese words for egg (tamago) and watch (uotchi), and the toy is unmistakably egg-shaped, so the use of eggshells in particular is quite characteristic of the brand. The model is paired with packaging that also uses recycled paper, and Bandai says the model aligns with its mission to “promote a greener future.”
The Tamagotchi is no longer just another 1990s toy that millennials fondly remember from when they were young. It has made a comeback in recent years, and both longtime gamers and kids have contributed to its renewed popularity. In May, the company relaunched Tamagotchi Connection — which longtime fans will remember as the model with a fake antenna — to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Last year, Bandai released the Wi-Fi-enabled Tamagotchi Uni that gives users access to the Tamaverse, a virtual playground where players can meet others, travel together, and dress up their characters.
The original Tamagotchi Celebration doesn't appear to have the more modern features of the Uni, but it does include the basic Tamagotchi gameplay mechanics. Players will have to raise their Tamagotchi to adulthood, feeding it, giving it medicine, cleaning up its poop, playing with it, and even disciplining it if it misbehaves. It's available exclusively on amazon, where it's currently available for pre-order for $30.
