This is possible thanks to the GB Operator:a USB dock that allows you to play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges on a computer (or on the x.com/meet_epilogue/status/1580589186540720130″>Steam cover) through a application called Playback and the open source mGBA emulator. The dock can also back up saved game data or easily extract photos captured with the Game Boy Camera.
Epilogue, the company behind this, shared a short video of the new feature on x and said Extra time“We now have a live stream from the Game Boy Camera, but we still need to fine-tune a few things and enable configuration options.”
He also described the new feature as “the worst and best webcam you'll ever own.”
A previous attempt at Turning the Game Boy Camera into a Webcam It required a lot of hardware, including a Super Nintendo, a Super Game Boy cartridge, a device to convert a composite video signal to HDMI, and a video capture card for a PC. Epilogue’s solution seems much simpler and almost painless — except to those forced to watch their coworkers livestreamed via a relic of digital photography.
In addition to the Game Boy-focused GB Operator, Epilogue recently shared the first footage of its upcoming SN Operator, which offers the same PC functionality and connectivity, but for Super Nintendo cartridges. There are currently no details on when SN Operator will be released, with “coming soon” being the only timeline shared for GB Operator updates.
