The Center for Investigative Journalism (CIR), the non-profit organization that produces Mother Jones and Reveal, announced on Thursday which is suing Microsoft and OpenAI for alleged copyright infringement, following similar actions by The New York Times and various other media outlets.
“OpenAI and Microsoft began collecting our stories to make their product more powerful, but they never asked permission or offered compensation, unlike other organizations that license our material,” said Monika Bauerlein, executive director of the Center for Investigative Journalism, in a statement. “This opportunistic behavior is not only unfair, it is a violation of copyright. The work of journalists, at CIR and everywhere, is valuable, and OpenAI and Microsoft know this.”
