A faulty update from cybersecurity vendor CrowdStrike caused a global outage last Friday, apparently affecting some 8.5 million Windows devices, according to Microsoft itself.
The update triggered a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), which took systems used by hospitals, airlines and banks offline. Only machines running Windows were affected: according to CrowdStrike, the total number of affected devices was “less than one percent of all Windows machines.”
According to CrowdStrike, the update “was designed to target new malicious pipelines that have been observed being used in cyberattacks by common C2 frameworks.” Unfortunately, it included a logic bug that crashed the operating system. In Saturday’s blog post, Microsoft’s vice president of enterprise and OS security, David Weston, wrote that the company is working with CrowdStrike to “develop a scalable solution” to patch the flawed update. Microsoft has also asked amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) for help.
Unfortunately, not everything is settled yet – just ask Delta passengers over the weekend.

The foldable king, but for how much longer?
No one has been making foldable phones longer than Samsung, but the company’s pace of innovation has slowed as new rivals like the OnePlus Open and Pixel Fold have arrived. Now, for 2024, Samsung has beefed up the Galaxy Z Fold 6 with a stronger yet significantly lighter frame, a new ultra-wide camera, and a bunch of ai-powered tools. It’s better, sure, but it feels like complacency is eroding Samsung’s lead in the foldable space.

Review of Kunitsu-Gami: Demonic Delights
Come for the humanity, stay for the beautifully presented desserts.
Kunitshu Gami is a game of two halves: frenetic combat and peaceful base-building. Demonic enemies are often disgusting (intentionally!), pus-filled, and armed with claws. The game combines real-time combat with tower defense mechanics, and all of it takes place in an expanded third-person view. With so many identical action RPGs and Soulslikes, Kunitshu Gami It takes a different and refreshing approach. Oh, and lots of delicious-looking, highly detailed video game food.

“I shouldn't be there.”
NASA scientists say pure sulfur has been found on Mars for the first time after the Curiosity rover inadvertently discovered a cluster of yellow crystals as it drove over a rock. And it appears the area is full of sulfur. While sulfur-bearing minerals have been observed on the red planet, elemental sulfur has never been seen before. Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity's project scientist, said: “It shouldn't be there, so now we have to explain it.”

There is also a mix of nuts and coffee, so you can replenish your energy.
Rivian just opened its first electric vehicle charging stop, 24 miles outside Yosemite National Park. In addition to five DC fast chargers just for Rivian owners, there are restrooms, a lounge with a small library, a water refill station, free coffee, and a DIY trail mix. These other amenities are open to everyone, and Rivian says it’s planning more charging stations “around national parks and other high-traffic areas across the country.”
