Gift this to the runner in your life who loves to put in a few miles in the morning and then load up on carbs right after. get up and run is the third and most recent cookbook from Olympic and marathon champion Shalane Flanagan. (She is perhaps best known for being the first American woman in 40 years to win the New York City Marathon. Either that, or for its colorful language.) While her previous two books offered a fairly broad sample, her latest installment focuses on everyone's favorite meal: breakfast. (And snacks too. Who doesn't love snacks?)
I own Flanagan's first cookbook, Run fast. eat slowlyand I have returned to her healthy Superhero Muffins repeatedly. (They're so good, you won't even taste the shredded zucchini and carrot.) Apparently, that recipe stuck with a lot of other people too, because Flanagan's latest cookbook In fact leans toward muffins, with 24 new superhero recipes in total, including a mix of sweet and savory. Beyond muffins, however, the book also has other breakfast recipes, plus recovery drinks and baked treats like cookies and bars. As an added bonus, it's also vegetarian-friendly, with 107 recipes, 52 that are vegan and another 26 that could easily be modified to a vegan diet. – Dana Wollman, former editor in chief
