Rebel Moon: Part 2 – The Scargiver It's an empty party. It's a relentless onslaught of explosions, sci-fi tropes, and pointless exposition that amount to nothing. And yet, it's still somehow better than the first film in Zack Snyder's aspiring sci-fi epic franchise for Netflix. Rebel Moon: Part 1 – A Child of Fire. (What do these titles really mean? Who cares.)
With all the boring table setting complete, Snyder can let his true talents soar. Rogue Moon: Part 2 offering endless battles filled with slow-motion action and heroic poses. It looks great, I just wish it was of some use. Anything.
Spoilers ahead for Rebel Moon: Part 2.
If you somehow missed the first one rebel moon movie, the basic setup is that it is Star Wars Satisfies The seven samurai. Sofia Boutella plays Kora, a former elite soldier of an evil empire who hides out in an all-too-idyllic farming town, simply planting and harvesting her days. When a group of evil military men kill the village chief and begin threatening a young girl, Kora goes on a killing spree (in defense!), leaving the community open to a retaliatory attack.
He spends the first film recruiting potential warriors to defend the village, including a fallen gladiator (Djimoun Hounsou) and a badass swordswoman (Doona Bae). (Their names are Titus and Nemesis, respectively, but it doesn't really matter because the characters are paper thin.)
Full disclosure: I attempted to write a review for the first time. rebel moon and he simply gave up in disgust. It was a surprisingly boring epic, to the point that it took me several days to watch it without falling asleep. In the end, I was only left with a feeling of dread, knowing that there were still another two hours of rebel moon in front of me.
It's a bit of empty praise, but at least I didn't fall asleep during The Scargiver. Mainly, that's because the film has a sense of momentum and a lot more action. You can turn off your brain and enjoy the pretty pictures, just like you would with Snyder's. Sucker Punch, Justice League and watchmen adaptation. He's more of a stylist than a natural storyteller, but occasionally Snyder's images, such as an unnerving montage of our heroes harvesting wheat, can be almost poetic.
It's a shame that I didn't care much about the film's characters or any aspect of its story. James Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy The trilogy made us fall in love with a band of misfits and failures, with stories that led directly to their personal and emotional growth. The crew in rebel mooninstead, they feel like cardboard cutouts of better movies, and the overall plot feels forced (there's even a setup for another movie at the end).
Hounsou tries to sell Titus' pathos with his eyes, but he can't do much. And while Bae's warrior wife radiates calm (and has a very compelling flashback), she's wasted when the action really heats up. Then there's Jimmy, a robot voiced by Anthony Hopkins, who is introduced briefly in the first film and shows up here for a few minutes to kick ass. Because? It doesn't matter. In some ways, that character is also important enough to serve as the narrator for both of them. rebel moon movies (but it really seems like Snyder just wanted Hopkins' voice to add gravitas).
Perhaps the only real salvation for Rogue Moon: Part 2very similar to the first movie, is Ed Skrein as the villain Atticus Noble. As a sadistic baddie, he's really nothing new, but Skrein's intense set-pieces make the character interesting to watch. While Darth Vader exudes a calm sense of dread, Skrein's Noble is entertainingly chaotic, like the Joker crossed with Christoph Waltz's Hans Landa from Inglorious Bastards. He just has a lot of fun being bad, that's something!
Given how popular the first film was (according to twitter.com/ZackSnyder/status/1739692549466386728?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1739692549466386728%7Ctwgr%5Eb2cfd1ba4df81ccb90097a66279a20a979a8b5de%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fscreenbeasts.com%2Fnews%2Fmovie-news%2Fzack-snyders-rebel-moon-major-success-netflix-despite-poor-reviews%2F” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank” data-ylk=”slk:Snyder and Netflix;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas” class=”link “>Snyder and Netflixanyway), we'll probably see more rebel moon down the line. Snyder previously said that he would like to make a six-hour director's cut of both films, and recently said radio times who would like to stretch the rebel moon series of four or six films. Somehow, that feels like a threat.
