You’re watching Disney Plus and it’s too dark to see. so damn dark you are likely to be eaten by a grue. What the hell were these filmmakers thinking?
Turn off Dolby Vision, and maybe turn off HDR, in your cable box or TV settings menu.
I love HDR. I think all modern movies, TV shows, and games should take advantage of the incredible clarity that extra dynamic range can offer, especially on my OLED TV, where the beautiful bright colors and deep blacks are enough to bring an art lover to tears. .
However, the Disney Plus streaming service doesn’t seem to love HDRat least the Dolby Vision variety, when played on said TV.
In the mandalorian, a show often set in scorching deserts and brilliantly electrified spaceships, I didn’t much care for. So I started to see the Willow TV show, where most of the various episodes take place at night, in a gloomy abandoned castle, while the world is filled with a deep dark fog.
we could spend hours talking about the many terrible decisions that led me to see the Willow TV series: Let’s just say that we made mistakes, both me and the showrunner, and I have words for my colleague Alex Cranz.
After forcing myself to remember that HDR doesn’t make things brighter (it’s supposed to make them brighter and dimmer, hence the “dynamic range”), I tried adjusting my HDR settings.
The mist lifted and I could see.
If you’re not sure whether Dolby Vision or HDR is keeping you in the dark, here’s a simple test: Pause and go back until you see thumbnails appear like the ones in my image slider above. If the difference is night and day, you might want to try toggling the HDR settings.
