Playdate’s Catalog game store has received its first update since its launch last month, and it’s a small but eclectic mix of five titles that even includes a productivity app. The official owner, core failure, is a survival game where you pilot a mining droid while collecting resources and dodging hapless aliens. However, the real star could be crankshaft. Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like: it’s a calculator that uses your handheld’s crank to input values. You can even use a synthetic voice to convey calculations like a modern Speak & Math.
Other additions include physics driven flight gameplay. gravity expressadaptation of mahjong lonely sparrow and the creepy puzzle solver Life is too short. Prices start at just $1 per Life is too short up to $10 per gravity express and lonely sparrow. As with the initial batch of the game, these are effectively impulse buys.

The catalog selection remains small at 21 titles. For comparison, the first “season” included with Playdate provides 24 games. However, this first expansion might give you an idea of what to expect, namely a modest but steady stream of wacky experiences built around the console’s black-and-white screen and unusual controls. They probably won’t replace the epics like the last Legend of Zelda game, but they’re not meant to be. These are quick fixes that you can play while waiting for the bus or taking a break at work.
