Honda and Nissan have officially confirmed rumors that they are seeking a merger. Both would continue to operate under their brands, but with a new joint holding company as parent company. If Nissan-controlled Mitsubishi also joined, the combined group would become the world's third-largest automaker by sales volume, with a net worth of up to $50 billion.
Nissan and Honda previously work together on the development of electric vehicles, but the joint venture would be much more integrated. According to the press release, it could include standardizing vehicle platforms, unifying research and development teams, and optimizing manufacturing systems and facilities. This could help reduce costs.
In the United States, Nissan sells full-size trucks and SUVs that Honda doesn't offer, in addition to having more experience in electric and plug-in electric vehicles. On the other hand, Honda has relatively stable finances, while Nissan has struggled, particularly in Japan.
