Netflix begins 2024 with a vision of our dystopian future. The streamer has just released a new trailer for The kitchen, which imagines a version of London in the near future, complete with reckless biker gangs and plenty of holographic screens to complete the cyberpunk look. The film is directed by Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya (who also serves as co-writer and co-producer) and begins streaming on January 19, 2024.
According to Netflix's description, in this version of London “the gap between rich and poor has widened to its limits,” leading to the film's main setting.
All forms of social housing have been eradicated and only The Kitchen remains. A community that refuses to move from the place they call home. This is where we meet a lonely Izi, who lives here out of necessity and is desperately trying to find a way out, and 12-year-old Benji, who has lost his mother and is looking for a family. We follow our unlikely couple as they struggle to forge a relationship in a system that is stacked against them.
The kitchen stars top boyKane Robinson, a musician also known as Kano, in the lead role of Izi, opposite newcomer Jedaiah Bannerman as Benji. The rest of the cast includes Hope Ikpoku Jnr, Ian Wright, BackRoad Gee, Cristale, Teija Kabs and Demmy Ladipo.
