For those who don’t know, animation studio Production IG has worked on some of the most iconic anime in history, since the original. ghost in the shell movie to recent releases like the Star Wars Visions anthology. For terminator – which by the way does not yet have an official name, and is in some ways the first animated version of the franchise – the eight-episode series will be directed by Masashi Kudo, best known for working on the Bleach franchise, with Mattson Tomlin (Project power and Mother/Android) serving as writer and showrunner.
As to where it fits into the terminator timeline, here’s the official premise:
2022: A future war has been fought for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines. 1997: The ai known as Skynet became self-aware and began its war against humanity. Trapped between the future and this past, there is a soldier sent to the past to change the destiny of humanity.
He arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who is working to launch a new artificial intelligence system designed to compete with Skynet’s imminent attack on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is pursued by a relentless assassin from the future who forever alters the fate of his three children.
