National Geographic is no stranger to new media. The network has produced a number of immersive virtual reality experiences, 360 degree videosand even their own “Space Projection Helmets” for their big-budget spectacle. A strange rockToday, it finally offers its first immersive experience for Apple Vision Pro: a Disney+ environment featuring Iceland's Thingvellir National Park. Now you can sit back and watch the Avengers in 3D among pristine white snow, towering rock formations, and a clear blue sky (or a starry night). Along with that film, Disney+ is also adding 3D versions of He Age of Ultron and the first two Ant Man today's movies.
While standing in the middle of a snow-filled park isn't quite as adventurous as, say, paddling a kayak through Arctic waters in VR, the environment proves that Nat Geo isn't completely ignoring the Vision Pro. Apple's headset lacked any truly immersive experiences beyond the “Encounter Dinosaurs” demo it came with and Marvel's What If…?
I'm not looking forward to a big-budget National Geographic experience designed solely for Vision Pro, but it's not outside the realm of possibility. Nat Geo could reconfigure some of its existing VR projects to work on Vision Pro, or even adapt them. A strange rock Unique helmet projection view. (I bet very few people saw the footage that way.)
