Motorola's Moto G Stylus 5G returns this year with some notable spec improvements and a striking new design. This year's version gets wireless charging and an improved display, while still retaining old features like a headphone jack and microSD card slot, all for $399.
The G Stylus 5G is still a big phone with a capital B: it comes with a 6.7-inch display. It's a 1080p panel with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, upgrading last year's 6.6-inch LCD screen. There's a generous 5000mAh battery, supporting 30W wired fast charging and 15W wireless charging. The Stylus 5G 2024 uses the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset; Curiously, it is the same as last year's model. It's not often you see phone makers go back to the same chipset two years in a row, but at least this time it comes with more RAM: 8GB compared to 6GB.
The built-in stylus also comes with some improvements. Motorola's press release states that it uses a “larger contact area” and some software updates to improve the user interface and reduce latency when using the pen. The main rear camera is still a 50-megapixel sensor with optical image stabilization, but the 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera and 32-megapixel selfie camera are updated. The selfie camera uses pixel binning for better low-light sensitivity, which should lead to better low-light photos.
The Stylus 5G also ditches last year's bland design, embracing Motorola's apparent ethos this year of making phones fun again. The back panel features a soft-touch vegan leather finish. (I know, I know, that's a fancy term for plastic.) The phone will be sold in two color options: caramel latte and an orange-red scarlet wave. Honestly, they both look great.
It all looks good on paper, but I've recently been disappointed by bloatware on Motorola's budget and mid-range phones; Last year's Moto G Stylus 5G was full of things. Unfortunately, I'm not expecting a big change this year. In any case, the Moto G 5G Stylus 2024 will go on sale on May 30 for $399 unlocked.
