There won't be a proper fix until Microsoft releases a patched update. However, you can fix the problem by uninstalling all security updates. In an unfortunate moment for CEO Satya Nadella, saying last week that he wants Microsoft to put “security above all else.” I can't imagine making customers choose (temporarily) between being left without a VPN and losing the latest protection, that's what I had in mind.
At least one Redditor claims that uninstalling and reinstalling their VPN app fixed the problem for them, so it may be worth a try before moving on to more drastic measures.
