Looking at the Walmart and Best Buy sites, these are new laptops and not refurbished models, making the $699/$649.99 price attractive. That said, you can only choose the base model, which comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Normally I'd be angry at 8GB of RAM and such a small storage configuration in 2024, but the price drop takes some of the pain away. These prices are even lower than recent discounts that had dropped the laptop to $749.
The only thing that's unclear is how long Apple will continue to supply Walmart (or other retailers) with new M1 Airs or if this is a short-term deal until existing stock runs out. We reached out to Apple for clarification but did not immediately receive a response.
If this is an ongoing deal, that's huge for wedgeheads everywhere. And even if it's not, at least it gives people the option to get one before they actually run out. The M1 Air is a much-loved laptop and it warms our hearts to see that the wedge shape will remain available for a little while longer.
Update March 17 at 5 pm ET: Updated to note that Best Buy has dropped the price of the M1 MacBook Air from $999.99 to $649.99.
