IKEA launches a new interior design service that provides clients with personalized assistance in decorating and furnishing their rooms. The product-focused company is moving toward service offerings, moving from putting the work in the hands of the customer with apps to letting “IKEA designers” handle everything. IKEA says they’ll help you with everything from choosing products to shipping them. It’s also leveraging its TaskRabbit property to pair customers with DIY experts to assemble ordered furniture when it arrives.
Clearly IKEA thinks everyone has gotten comfortable enough with video calls in recent years as everything is done digitally, but the process seems pretty straightforward: it starts with one quiz on the IKEA USA site, then three one-on-ones. . video calls. Clients get an idea board and initial plans for the space to align the vision, followed by a meeting to approve ideas and products. They walk away with 3D renderings, an idea board, a floor plan, drawings, a product list, and material options.
IKEA already offers something similar for kitchens, with customers being able to schedule an appointment to measure and design their kitchen for free with a IKEA kitchen planner. Anyone living in the US can also opt in to an online meeting for this service.
The new interior design service comes at a cost, as meetings with an IKEA interior designer cost $99 per room for one person and $299 per room for businesses. The prices aren’t bad considering the average interior designer will cost between $50 and $500 an hour, according to Forbes. Although IKEA also benefits from any furniture chosen with the interior designer and while their offers are not designer prices, they can still add up to a hefty bill.
