As part of a deal it reached with Microsoft last year, iFixit began selling original Xbox parts and offering repair guides, depending on changes to its Microsoft Repair Center seen by The edge. It now offers parts for Xbox Series S and x models (digital and disk drive), ranging from cases to power supplies and motherboards, along with tool kits, thermal paste, and more.
iFixit announced its partnership with Microsoft in 2023 when it began offering official replacement parts for Microsoft Surface laptops. As part of that, it offered teardown videos and step-by-step guides to help simplify relatively complex repairs.
It's doing the same with Xbox, showing guides on how to replace motherboards for each console, detailing each step and providing a list of parts and tools needed. Repairing the motherboard, for example, requires 29 installation steps along with additional steps to put everything back together. However, so far, the company has not released any videos like it did for the Surface devices.
iFixit has similar deals with other tech giants, offering replacement parts for Google Pixel tablets and Google Pixel Fold devices. It also works with accessory maker Logitech and offers repair parts for two of its most popular mouse models. The main obstacle is Apple, although iFixit recently gave the iPhone 16 a decent repairability score after damaging the previous model due to software-restricted “parts pairing” requirements. Last month, the company broke down the PS5 Pro and found it was decently repairable, although it doesn't sell any parts for Sony's console.
