Is your weekend a little basic? Here's something that might entertain you for a minute or two. The Grok-2 chatbot is <a target="_blank" data-i13n="cpos:1;pos:1" href="https://x.com/blankspeaker/status/1864826210951307330″ rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank” data-ylk=”slk:now free for everyone to fool around;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas” class=”link “>now free for everyone to play with in x. We knew this was coming and, well, now it's here. Take it in, baby.
There are some limitations for those who don't want to spend $8 (or more) each month on x Premium. The free tier only allows ten messages in each two-hour period. There is also a strict limit on image analysis: three requests per day. This Grok-2 beta will now be the only game in x Town, as it replaces the pre-existing Grok-2 mini chatbot.

Breaking: Grok's free tier is now available worldwide.
It is very limited:
It can analyze 3 images a day.
You can send 10 messages every 2 hours, including images.
x also removed Grok 2 mini.
Now you can only make queries to grok 2. <a target="_blank" href="https://t.co/pHWsaLgewk" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:pic.twitter.com/pHWsaLgewk;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas” class=”link “>pic.twitter.com/pHWsaLgewk

Look. Grok is not the most advanced chatbot on the planet. All LLMs make mistakesbut Grok is particularly prone to them. It says directly on the chat page that users should “check their results.” To that end, it caused a stir earlier this year when the little robot was caught handing out false election information.
The image generation component has also come under fire in recent months after it was used to create things like <a target="_blank" data-i13n="cpos:7;pos:1" href="https://x.com/benjamindekr/status/1823581657137344791?s=61″ rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank” data-ylk=”slk:Barack Obama doing cocaine;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas” class=”link “>Barack Obama using cocaine and <a target="_blank" data-i13n="cpos:8;pos:1" href="https://x.com/benjamindekr/status/1823582769521283293?s=61″ rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank” data-ylk=”slk:Donald Trump pointing some guns;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas” class=”link “>Donald Trump pointing some guns. It has also been used to violate copyright, as it created things like an image of <a target="_blank" data-i13n="cpos:9;pos:1" href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/article/2024/aug/14/musk-ai-chatbot-images-grok-x” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank” data-ylk=”slk:Mickey Mouse saluting Adolph Hitler;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas” class=”link “>Mickey Mouse greeting Adolf Hitler.
It is no secret that has been bleeding users as they depart for the greener pastures of Threads, Bluesky, or in rare cases, real life. Perhaps Elon Musk and his cohorts removed the Grok paywall to attract dissatisfied users. However, it is also likely that x made this move to better compete in a crowded market. There are plenty of free chatbots, including OpenAI's ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude.
has been informed by the Wall Street Journal that xAI, which recently raised 6 billion dollars in a financing roundis considering a standalone Grok app. This is another thing that most large ai companies already offer.
So if you're really bored, head over to your (probably inactive) x account and give Grok a try. I did so and generated some images of cats eating spaghetti before maximizing the query limit. Look at all the spaghetti on that table. Bad kitties!
