When it comes to filing and paying your 2023 federal and state taxes, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that if you live in Maine or Massachusetts, you have until Wednesday, April 17, due to the Patriot Day and Emancipation Day holidays.
The bad news is: whether you have to apply by April 15 or April 17, you still have to apply.
If you won't be able to file your taxes by then, due to a family emergency, a big work project, or simply procrastination, what should you do? Well, one thing not to do is panic. You can request an extension and it won't take long.
If you are an individual (and let's assume you are), you can easily request an extension online by visiting filling out Form 4868 using the IRS Free File Program. (Filing an extension is free regardless of your income level.) Some things to keep in mind:
