So you just bought yourself an NVMe drive to add more storage to your PlayStation 5. Don't worry. If you are not sure how to install the SSD, you have come to the right place. Not only is the process relatively simple, but this guide will walk you through every step, including all the tools you need. If you came here looking for a recommendation on which NVMe to buy for your PS5 or PS5 Pro, check out our dedicated guide to the best SSDs for PS5.
How to install a PS5 SSD
1. Turn off everything to remove the stand.
Before trying to add more storage over NVMe, make sure you have The latest Sony software installed. Once you're updated, installing a PS5 SSD is pretty simple. Sony recommends a #1 Phillips or Phillips screwdriver, but this isn't rocket science. Any similar sized crosshead screwdriver will work fine. If you don't have a screwdriver, the DIY heroes at iFixit sell a fantastic set for $20.
Start by turning off your PS5 or PS5 Pro, unplugging everything, removing the stand, and turning it over to its bottom. If you have a launch PS5, that's the disc drive side; If you have a digital launch edition, it's the side without the PlayStation logo. As for the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro, the expansion slot is in the same place: behind the smaller of the two panels.
Sony has a video guide To remove the outer cover here, but the essential thing is to gently lift the opposite corners and slide the panel towards the flat end of the console. This has a special ability and requires very little effort or strength. If you don't succeed, instead of forcing things, readjust your grip and try again.
2. Access the drive bay
Once you have everything open, you will see a rectangular piece of metal with a screw holding it in place. Remove that screw and you can access the drive bay.
You'll see five holes inside, each number corresponding to the lengths of standard SSD drives. The number 110 will have a metal insert and a screw inside. You need to remove the screw with a screwdriver and then unscrew the insert with your fingers and move it to the corresponding hole. For most units, it will be 80.
3. SSD slot
Then take your SSD and put it in. The slot is on the edge closest to the number “30” and the SSDs are keyed to fit only one way, so no force is required. If it doesn't slide in, don't force it. You will notice that the SSD does not lie flat. It's fine and it's as expected.
4. Screw the drive bay back
Once the SSD is in place, take the screw you removed from the insert, line it up with the small notch on the end of your SSD, and push it down to match the insert. Give the screw a few turns (it doesn't need to be very tight) and you're done.
Replace the metal cover, screw it on, and then slide the outer plastic cover back on.
When you turn on the PS5 for the first time, it will ask you to format the drive. Do that! You have now successfully expanded your console storage and can download and move games to it.
