On Tuesday, Instagram launched a new feature called notes. It lives in the Message section of Instagram and allows people to post a kind of status update, like a Story, but just text. It’s a lot like the old AIM away messages: you can only post one Note at a time, and updating it will erase its previous status. Also, you can only post with visibility to “Close Friends” or people with whom you have a mutual relationship.
It’s still not entirely clear what people will use this for. Is it really like AIM, where people will post cryptic song lyrics? Will it be like Twitter, but just one short message at a time? Who knows!
Eventually, we’ll all figure out what Notes “should” look like, and we’ll all fall in line or the feature will just be exhausted and unused, like the old one. facebook touch. I encourage you to take advantage of this time of confusion about what Notes is and what exactly we are supposed to use it for.
Yes, I suggest you trick your friends into thinking you posted a rogue DM. This is what you should post: “OMG I can’t believe I said that about you!”
