Google will replace Google Assistant on Android phones with Gemini at the end of this year, the company announced Friday.
Google He said in a blog post which will update more Google Assistant users to Gemini “in the coming months.” At the end of this year, the assistant will no longer be accessible in most mobile devices or available in application stores.
“In addition, we will update tablets, cars and devices that connect to your phone, such as headphones and watches, to Gemini,” added the company. “We are also bringing a new experience, driven by Gemini, at home devices such as speakers, screens and televisions.”
Google said it will share more details with users in the coming months, and that, until then, the assistant will continue to operate in the devices mentioned above.
Google Notes has worked to improve Gemini user experience before the assistant accelerates, especially for users who depend on several assistant functions. For example, Google has added several highly requested features to Gemini on Android devices, such as the ability to reproduce music, timer support and an option to take actions directly from a user's lock screen.
The movement to drop the assistant in favor of Gemini is not surprising, especially considering that Google launched its Pixel 9 smartphone line with Gemini as the default virtual assistant. Google points out that Gemini has more advanced capabilities than the assistant (in theory, at least), and provides new ways of obtaining help and information on topics through tools such as Gemini Live and deep research.
