General Motors has begun production of the Hummer EV SUV at its Factory Zero in Michigan, according to Nicole Schmitz, a company spokeswoman. the detroit press reported on Monday that customers could start receiving their orders by the end of the first quarter. That aligns with GM’s FAQ stating that the SUV will be available in “early 2023.”
I won’t blame anyone thinking, “Wait, haven’t they been making these for a while?”, because GM started delivering the truck version of the Hummer EV, which has a five-foot-long bed, in December 2021. In October 2022, the announced company that it had built 782 of the vehicles through 2022 and said it had around 90,000 reservations for both the pickup and SUV versions. Last summer, The Wall Street Journal reported that GM only made about 12 Hummer electric vehicles per day.
“I am concerned about the increased risk of serious injury and death for all road users due to heavier curb weights and the increasing size, power and performance of vehicles on our roads, including electric vehicles. he said before specifically calling Hummer’s 10,000. -plus the gross vehicle weight rating in pounds. (He also mentioned how electric vehicles from Ford, Volvo, and Toyota were significantly heavier than their gasoline-powered counterparts.)
That makes it a bit ironic, then, that GM issued a press release about how he’s donating the proceeds from the sale of the first production Hummer SUV at auction to a charity called “Tread Lightly!” whose goal is to “balance the needs of people who enjoy outdoor recreation with the need to maintain healthy ecosystems and thriving wildlife populations across the country.” While I’m definitely happy to hear the nonprofit will get $500,000, I don’t think anyone could ride lightly in a Hummer EV SUV.
