Fortnite Epic Games is reversing a long-held policy for its battle passes. Previously, developer Epic Games had treated battle pass items as limited-time rewards that would never appear in the in-game store. In the future, Epic Games may make battle pass rewards available in the store, but not until at least 18 months after the pass expires. The company said the updated policy will have no impact on battle pass pricing.
“This change allows us to continue investing in exciting new Battle Pass rewards while allowing players in the future to also enjoy content including outfits based on popular licensed characters,” Epic Games said in a statement. published on Wednesday.
This policy covers all types of items that may appear in a Fortnite Battle Pass. The store may offer alternative styles of a Battle Pass reward in addition to the original. The 18-month cooldown will also apply to any items in the Additional Reward and Mission Reward tabs of the game.
The ability to purchase a cosmetic item later takes some of the pressure of season-long exclusivity off of players. Epic said there was no guarantee that a Battle Pass cosmetic item would be available in the store at a later date, so playing enough to earn unlocks is still the most reliable way to get an item you really want. However, the studio did say it would notify players if an item became available exclusively through the Battle Pass.
