The Federal Communications Commission has New rules governing the use of ai-generated phone calls and text messages. Part of the proposal focuses on creating a clear definition of ai-generated calls, and the rest focuses on consumer protection by requiring companies to disclose when ai is used in calls or text messages.
“This gives consumers the opportunity to identify and avoid calls or text messages that pose a higher risk of fraud and other scams,” the FCC said. The agency also seeks to ensure that legitimate uses of ai to help people with disabilities communicate remain protected.
Today’s proposal is the latest action by the FCC to regulate the use of ai in robocalls and automated text messages. The commission has already taken action regarding ai-generated voices in robocalls and needs to crack down on the practice. Ahead of this year’s November election, there has already been notable use of ai-powered robocalls to New Hampshire voters.
