Fans of Mario's popular blog, Mario Dinner Brothhave come together to remind us that the Internet can still be a place where good things happen.
Supper Mario Broth is one of the healthiest Mario blogs on the Internet. Since 2017, its owner has posted a regular stream of Mario-flavored tidbits for you to dig up, including interesting glitches, old ads and products, screenshots, gifs, artwork, and more. If it's obscure and has to do with Mario, Supper Mario Broth will let you know, and the blog has become a celebrated institution in the broader Nintendo community.
However, on October 17, the person behind all this wonderful content posted a video saying the entire effort was in danger of being permanently shut down. “This is the end of Supper Mario Broth as we know it,” said the creator, who has not revealed his real name. and prefers simply to be called Caldo.
In the short but heartbreaking video, Broth revealed that for the past six years he was his mother's primary caregiver. He said the government assistance he received for that job, plus a part-time salary and meager income from his Patreon, was barely enough to allow him to work at Supper full time. However, Broth shared that his mother passed away and his other income would not be enough to stay in his apartment.
“I'll have to get a full-time job,” he said. “And I won’t have time to make Supper Mario Broth anymore.”
Broth ends the video with an emotional plea for help from his fans.
“I'm praying for a miracle,” Broth said.
The next day, October 18, Broth posted an update saying that the support he received was so good that he could not only continue his job full-time but could also expand his operations.
Thanks to community, mutual support, and genuine human empathy, one person was able to save his livelihood. Not only that, but Broth's work has genuinely contributed to the preservation of Mario history and, fortunately, we can still enjoy it.
“I will always remember (…) all the joy we shared at Mario,” Broth said. “And I hope that no matter what happens, you will remember me.”
