Elon Musk said today that X (formerly Twitter) will soon launch two new premium tiers, confirming previous reports and code sightings.
The platform owner said a tier will cost less than the current $8 per month plan, but won’t reduce ads. The other level will be more expensive and will remove all ads. The current premium plan promises to show “half advertising” to subscribers. Musk did not mention the prices of these new levels.
Earlier this month, @aaronp613 I found references in the X code to three separate premium tiers. Separately, Bloomberg He also reported that the company is testing multiple paid plans to generate more revenue.
In particular, Meta is said to be considering an ad-free level in response to an EU court. judgment, which says users should have the option of an ad-free tier if they decline consent for the company to process their data. TikTok also recently confirmed that it is testing an ad-free tier. It is not clear whether X’s move is a response to the EU Court ruling.
Musk and company. are testing new ways to boost revenue from X. Earlier this week, the company began testing a $1 per year plan for new users in New Zealand and the Philippines for basic features like posting, liking, and reposting. The social network said this measure was aimed at reducing the number of bots on the platform and was not intended to be “a profit generator.”
Earlier this month, Reuters reported that since technology/us-ad-revenue-musks-x-declined-each-month-since-takeover-data-2023-10-04/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Ad revenue from Musk acquisition has fallen steadily. Therefore, it is not surprising that Musk is taking steps to increase subscription revenue.
As the company tries to attract advertisers with former NBCU executive Linda Yaccarino as CEO, it is trying to publish metrics that look attractive. Earlier this month, Yaccarino said that X has around 245 million daily active users. and 500 million daily publications.
