Google Gemini is the generative generative model of the technological giant. When I wrote it for the first time in 2023, Google was struggling to reach its generative rivals of ai . At that moment I felt that Gemini was impressive, but it was staying behind Chatgpt in the world of chatbot supremacy in general and as a particular teaching tool.
After exploring a series of exercises related to education with the free version of Gemini, I think that gap has closed. And in any case, in my use, Gemini seems faster and has a softer interface than the OpenAi chatgpt.
Gemini also feeds a series of specific education tools for Google, including Learnlm, which recently left me very impressed and a set of gemini tools for education available through Google Education. For this review, however, I concentrated exclusively on the version ready to use Gemini 2.0 Flash .
This is how Gemini served in a variety of tasks related to my work as a professor and university education in general.
Gemini and class preparation
Class preparation is a common use case for ai in education, so I started asking Gemini to create a scheme for a first -year composition class. I wrote: I am a university teacher. Teaching an introduction course to the College of Composition for Freshmen. I want to teach students how to write an argumentative essay with a strong thesis that makes a position. I also want them to learn the basic concepts of the appointment. Can you create a lesson plan, request an argumentative writing task of 4-5 pages and slide presentation that you can discuss?
Gemini created a quick response that provided each element that I asked for that it is not the submission of slides. The notice for the writing task was a good start and the bullet points that he shared for a presentation were the solid contours of what he often taught when I teach these classes. I do not believe that this presentation is ready to work, but it could be a good starting point, especially for a new teacher who seeks to start with how they could organize this type of class.
Gemini Writing Council
To see how a student could interact with Gemini, I asked him to help me eliminate the opinion elements of a piece he had written that he was full of opinion statements and, therefore, it was not good traditional news.
Gemini offered useful advice on the difference between opinion and news writing, and some solid rewriting of my opinion writing in a more neutral news. In a perfect world, when he works with the students, Gemini did not rewrite the work, but would suggest ways to rewrite it, but in general, I think Gemini could help a student who struggles to capture the writing of news to return to the track.
However, like all the writing tools that I have tried so far, I am not impressed with its broader rewriting attempts. For example, I thought that his suggested rewriting for the opening of this story was lifeless and was not really appropriate for a magazine story. Here is the comparison:
My original: Google Gemini is the generative generative model of the technological giant. When I first wrote it in 2023, Google was struggling to reach its generative rival of ai . At that moment I felt that Gemini was impressive, but it was staying behind Chatgpt in the world of chatbot supremacy in general and as a particular teaching tool. Gemini rewriting: Google Gemini, the company's advanced generative model, has suffered significant evolution since its initial launch in 2023. Although early evaluations highlighted areas for development, particularly in educational applications, recent advances demonstrate its growing potential as a powerful tool for learning and teaching.
Gemini tutoring ability
I asked Gemini to help me understand the news (a topic that I teach) and the rule of quantum mechanics born (a topic with which I am vaguely familiar but I try to understand better).
In both cases, the information that Gemini provided was useful, and I did not see any inaccuracy. However, criticism of ai tutors in general is that they can act as response machines for students and do not participate in critical thinking to help them understand issues, and that criticism is applied here.
Without an elaborate application, Gemini acted as a search engine on request, quickly providing answers to several questions, which was still useful and could be desirable in non -education environments, but it is not perfect for deeper teaching and learning.
Some of the specific education tools that I have tried will be involved in one more dialogue, providing questionnaires and questions that could force a student to put into action the concepts they are learning. The best example of this I have seen is the Google Learnlm, which I mentioned above.
Gemini writing ability
One of the ways in which many educators interact with ai tools is when their students use anyone to send a writing.
To see what Gemini is capable in this regard, I put one of my indications in the tool and asked him to write an answer. The answer was good, but it didn't seem that a student wrote it. The ai often has no life, but Gemini sounded a particular textbook and not as a student.
I also gave Gemini a message of creative writing, which generated a result that was characteristically cliché of corn. For now, with the free version of Gemini, I am sure that I can still detect the work generated by the students and that my work as a writer is not in immediate danger.
End
Gemini is a great free artificial intelligence tool that answers speed questions, Internet access and an easy interface. Given Google's prominence in the field of technology , it is a tool with which teachers probably want to familiarize themselves. It serves as a good alternative to some pay options, and has an easier website to navigate than some IA chatbot competitors.
Google and others offer more education -centered tools that are probably better in the classroom, but for educators looking for a rapid tool to use for activities such as classes and rain of ideas, Gemini is an excellent option.
