BOSTON – The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has expanded its ALL in Tutoring reading initiative to include evidence-based resources from Lexiato Cambium Learning Group Brand. Resources are available for students in grades three through eight who participate in the ALL In Tutoring Reading Initiative and who have not mastered the Virginia Learning Standards. Your participating schools can now access Lexia Core5 Reading (Core5) for grades 3-5 and Lexia PowerUp Literacy (PowerUp) for grades 6-8 as part of your school's tutoring program in support of students with incomplete literacy learning due to learning loss from the pandemic.
Core5 and PowerUp are adaptive blended learning programs based on the science of reading that provide students with personalized learning paths. “Many school divisions have been requesting additional literacy resources to help address the varying levels of literacy supports their students need,” said Todd Reid, assistant superintendent. “Adding Lexia will help divisions meet the broad spectrum of student needs regarding digital platform reading and literacy support.”
Both Core5 and PowerUp are based on 40 years of literacy experience using a structured, explicit and systematic approach. The Virginia Standards of Learning are integrated into program reports and instructors can easily identify the Virginia SOL Primary Standards in online libraries and offline materials.
Core5's patented integrated test-free assessment technology predicts students' end-of-year performance and provides instructors with actionable, continuously standards-referenced data to prioritize and plan instruction with supporting offline instructional materials. PowerUp combines student-led online instruction with teacher-taught offline lessons and activities to simultaneously address gaps in foundational literacy skills while developing higher-order analytical skills.
PowerUp has also been shown to be up to five times more effective than other reading interventions in middle schools and students can potentially achieve several years of growth in a single academic year. Additionally, Ignite Reading's individualized tutoring on foundational reading skills will continue to be available for Virginia students with significant decoding gaps, who require intensive Tier 3 support.
Lexia will help participating schools, divisions, and VDOEs effectively implement the Core5 Reading and PowerUp Literacy programs. “We will assist schools with planning, roster preparation, professional learning sessions and ongoing support to division and school leaders, educators, tutors and parents,” said Lexia President Nick Gaehde.
Gaehde continued, “We already work with several school divisions within Virginia, and they will also be eligible for the additional success services (tutorials, resources, tools, and professional learning sessions) that we will provide as part of their ALL In Tutoring read. initiative plans. Our track record of success prompted the VDOE to partner with us and we are excited to make a difference for even more students in the state.”
