BOSTON – As school comes to a close for the summer, teachers can help students and their families turn literacy learning into summer fun. Lexiato Cambium Learning Group Brandshares more than 50 activities that teachers can suggest to families to help students maintain and even accelerate learning over summer break.
“ Investigation shows that students can lose up to two months of reading skills over the summer,” said Dr. Liz Brooke, Lexia Chief Learning Officer. “To combat that learning loss, we're sharing a carefully curated selection of easy, fun activities to help combat the 'summer slide' and ensure students are ready for the new school year.”
An example of a learning game for students in kindergarten through fourth grade helps improve students' familiarity with words and their components by drawing letters, sight words, or word parts, such as prefixes or suffixes, on the chalk floor. The student can jump to each item and read it aloud, like in a hopscotch game. In the case of prefixes or suffixes, young students can name a word that includes that part of the word. Bonus points for using the word in a sentence!
Below are examples of the words or word components that can be used for each grade level.
Kindergarten | First grade | Second grade | Third degree | Fourth grade |
letters of the alphabet | could | sweet | scam- | -ness |
they | once | strange | dis- | -bear |
four | of | giggle | ex- | -ment |
where | were | easy | evil- | -ity |
are | have | friend | Pro- | -ly |
there | very | happy | and- | -full |
saying | walk | wet | re- | -tion |
