Key points:
Even before the pandemic, educational leaders championed the need for strong internet connectivity in schools and communities. This need skyrocketed with the country's transition to online and hybrid learning during the peak pandemic years, and now, robust, reliable connectivity remains imperative for all educators and students.
A reliable, high-speed Internet connection can enhance technology-driven learning and unlock new learning potential, Verizon experts said during an eSchool News webinar on connectivity, moderated by eSN chief content officer Kevin Hogan. .
The webinar delves into the current state and future possibilities of technology-driven education, exploring solutions to elevate digital infrastructures while maximizing E-rate funding to foster inclusive, safe and efficient learning environments. At the heart of the debate is the critical role that increased bandwidth plays in empowering schools to harness the potential of new technologies.
Cybersecurity is one of the biggest K-12 technology challenges, and strong connectivity can help address this challenge. “One of the most important things we learned during the pandemic is how we protect our children now that we encourage them to use digital and online tools. How do we make sure our children are safe? said Kim Mirabella, vice president of business development at Verizon.
And with 17 million homes still lacking Internet access, leaving students unable to connect at home for research, homework, and other tasks, digital equity is another issue that requires a connectivity-based solution, especially as funding programs expire.
“We've had a lot of government programs, grant programs and funding, but as those programs start to dwindle, the problems don't go away,” Mirabella said.
