First was the cycle of fear: “ai will take all the teaching jobs!” Then came the hype cycle: “crypto, scratch that, ai will completely revolutionize our daily existence!” Today's announcement from the heavyweights. ai/”>khan academy and Microsoft Education Hopefully, it can signal the beginning of the reality cycle: real ai tools embedded in today's technologies that can make educators' lives easier at no cost. I was excited to engage in an embargoed conversation with Khan Academy's Chief Learning Officer, Kristen DiCerbo, and Microsoft's VP of Education, Deirdre Quarnstrom, to get a look under the hood. Have a listen:
Some details of the announcement:
- Microsoft is allowing Khan Academy to provide free access to its ai assistant, Khanmigo for Teachers, to K-12 educators in the US. We know educators are overworked and 55% of teachers are thinking about leaving the profession due to exhaustion. By making Khanmigo teacher tools available for free, teachers can now save time on administrative and planning tasks at no cost to them.
- Due to the high costs associated with running generative ai technology, Khanmigo for Teachers was previously only available to educators as a paid subscription. Microsoft is donating access to infrastructure optimized for Azure ai, making Khanmigo available free to US K-12 teachers, which will now be powered by the Azure OpenAI service.
- Khan Academy and Microsoft will also explore opportunities to improve mathematics tutoring in an affordable, scalable and adaptable way with a new version of Phi-3, a family of small language models (SLM) developed by Microsoft.
- Khan Academy content will now be integrated into Microsoft Copilot and Teams for Education, bringing high-quality ai-powered resources to more students.
