This year, after a careful review of the district’s use and success with the Mystery Science service, school administrators chose to renew the partnership with Discovery Education that brings Mystery Science to GCSS K-5 students. In doing so, the district will continue to create hands-on educational experiences that engage students and build their capacity for success throughout the remainder of their GCSS career and beyond.
Mystery Science, which joined the Discovery Education family of services in 2020 and has won the CODiE award for the best science teaching solution from SIIA for grades PK – 8, provides K-5 educators with easy-to-use, open-ended, and hands-on lessons that inspire students to love science. Each lesson begins by asking a question that is commonly asked by young students. Students then explore these questions through interactive videos featuring real-world images that foster a sense of wonder and actively support student participation in the accompanying discussion prompts.
Students then participate in easy-to-prepare hands-on labs using simple science supplies commonly found in classrooms or at home. Mystery Science contains everything teachers need to engage students in hands-on science and make that subject the best class of the day.
Mystery Science simplifies preparation for teachers, making it easy to integrate this resource into classroom instruction. Additionally, all K-5 science lessons are now available in Spanish, with accompanying videos featuring authentic Spanish narration and Spanish on-screen text (for discussion questions, vocabulary words, and step-by-step instructions). Ready-to-use, editable worksheets and assessments are also available in English and Spanish. In addition to Mystery Science, GCS educators will continue to use Discovery Education science technology books to support science teaching.
