ALA 2024 Annual Conference, SAN DIEGO – June 27, 2024 – Galepart of Cengage Group, has made significant improvements in Gale Literary Resource Center (LRC)The company has added new curated sets of primary sources and historical documents along with a host of other new and enhanced features to support primary source literacy and teaching. These updates, developed based on user feedback, were designed to make it easier for students who are less familiar with using these resources to conceptualize primary source documents, as well as to provide instructors and librarians with content to contextualize literary works and serve as models to support primary source literacy.
“Primary source databases contain millions of historical documents, which can be overwhelming and time-consuming for novice researchers and instructors developing courses,” said Seth Cayley, vice president of global academic products at Gale.LRC “It provides an accessible starting point with specific sets of primary sources that are easier to analyze and consume. This helps users better understand the materials, making connections and comparisons that open up new research possibilities and unique ways to interrogate literary works.”
'Criminal Investigation Center'Updates include:
- Selected sets of primary sources and historical documents: They provide a selection of accessible materials for students who are unfamiliar with the use of primary sources in the literary disciplines. The sets model conceptualization, a skill that includes distinguishing between primary and secondary sources and using primary sources to generate and refine research questions. These resource collections provide instructors with ready-to-use materials for discussion or a reference point for students to use to expand their research questions. Pages in the sets can be bookmarked for use in Library Guidesstudy programs or learning management systems.
- Native PDF access: provides easy access to native PDF documents via a new tab on the document page. Researchers are always presented with the HTML text first, for greater accessibility. Simplified access meets the needs of researchers who wish to view the original document without the additional step of downloading.
- Job portals and topics: Create content hubs around a literary work or topic to support and simplify common workflows. Newer researchers will quickly gain confidence through portals that provide an entry point to the wealth of diverse content available on LRC.
- Integrating the Gale College Collection: expands on more than 80,000 original works found in LRC by giving students access to novels, poems, and more through the Gale College Collection, a resource previously only available through Cengage MindTap courses. Access to the works being studied supports equity initiatives and simplifies access for students looking for specific parts of the text to review or cite.
Seventy of the newly selected sets are available now, and one hundred will be available beginning August 1. To ensure the inclusion of diverse authors from all periods, literary works were selected from among the most studied and the least studied, with a mix of classical and contemporary authors represented. Some of the literary works include: The odyssey, Village, The red convertible, Jane Eyre, The Underground Railroad, Frankenstein, Crime and Punishment and Nears. View The complete list of all works.
LRC provides a fluid research experience that helps students find a starting point, search across a wide variety of materials and time periods, and discover new ways to analyze information. A diverse, hybrid database containing award-winning scholarly journals and biographical and contextual materials. LRC supports interdisciplinary approaches to developing critical thinking and information literacy skills. The new curated sets add to the extensive content included in LRC with 50% of the sets focusing on works written by traditionally underrepresented and international authors building on the substantial volume of existing content supporting DEI initiatives. LRC It is aimed at upper-level high school and college students, as well as public libraries that support the academic and high school communities.
Gale will exhibit from LRC improvements at the ALA Annual Conference, June 28-July 1 in San Diego at Gale Booth #1317.
