WASHINGTON DC – Digital promise and Edtena are partnering to help train and support teachers in science-based reading instruction by incorporating Digital Promise's Learner Variability Project resources into Edthena offerings. Now, as teachers complete training cycles, they will be able to select a Path to the science of reading within Edthena’s ai Coach platform and access Digital Promise’s research-based content, strategies, and best practices.
“Educators need research-based strategies at their fingertips to implement Science of Reading programs with fidelity,” said Barbara Pape, Senior Director of the Learner Variability Project at Digital Promise. “Our Learner Variability Project resources are research-based and easily accessible through Edthena’s ai Coach.”
The hundreds of strategy recommendations for teachers are supported by published academic studies that document their predictive power for student outcomes. Student variability project draws on emerging research on learner variability to support a whole-child framework for student achievement.
ai Trainer Science of Reading is a first-of-its-kind adaptive solution that uses conversational ai to support teachers as they move through coaching cycles. Within the Science of Reading program, teachers will have a full suite of content-specific supports—covering topics like phonological awareness, sentence structure, and verbal reasoning—to help analyze their teaching and turn their students into expert readers.
Using the secure platform, teachers independently reflect on their practice and set short-term goals as part of a self-paced module that mirrors the educational coaching process. Teachers have an interactive conversation with Edie, the ai-powered coach, who asks probing, open-ended questions and offers personalized advice and resources for improvement.
“The ai Coach process helps all educators improve their Science of Reading instruction by focusing on implementing best practices,” said Adam Geller, Founder and CEO of Edthena. “Our partnership with Digital Promise ensures that educators’ learning experiences within ai Coach are grounded in research on how to help students become fluent readers and reach their full potential as learners.”
The evidence-based ai Coach process is designed to complement the efforts of school leaders and instructional coaches, and helps alleviate the time and scheduling constraints associated with in-person training sessions that can often be a barrier to ongoing professional learning. Teachers can meet with the virtual coach at a time that is convenient for the changing demands of the school day and have the option to pause and resume their training cycle at any time. This allows teachers to get the help they need, when they need it.
In addition to the new Reading Science track, which is available in both an early elementary and upper elementary version, teachers can also complete training cycles focused on common teaching techniques, such as checking for student comprehension, balancing student-teacher talk time, facilitating group discussions, and more.
