New York City districts and schools were selected based on their highly effective SEL programs that were incorporated into every phase of the school day and prioritized by administration and teachers.
Underpinning SEL success in these schools is a data-driven approach, leveraging the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA). This strengths-based social and emotional learning evaluator objectively measures students’ social-emotional competencies, including self-awareness, self-control, personal responsibility, decision-making, social awareness, relationship skills, goal-directed behavior, and optimistic thinking. DESSA provides insight into student strengths to build on and think more strategically about ways to support students when interventions are needed.
The leadership of these districts and schools was honored at the “SEL State of Mind Awards Ceremony” on June 27, 2023 at the Manhattan Penthouse, hosted by Aperture Education and Urban Assembly.
