I made fun of this last week and now it’s here. What am I referring to? It’s my up-to-date guide to finding media for class projects.
Over the past year, some of my old favorite sources of media for class projects have changed or disappeared entirely. They have been replaced by some new and updated sources of free sound effects, music, video, images, and drawings to use in class projects.
How to obtain a copy of the guide
People who subscribe to my Practical Education Technology Week newsletter received a copy of the guide via email on Sunday night. If you would like a copy emailed to you, please sign up for my newsletter and I will be happy to send it to you. Below are some highlights from the guide.
CocoMaterial is an online library of over 2,500 drawings that you can download and reuse for free. Unlike some similar sites, CocoMaterial does not offer anything other than drawings and does not fill the search results page with ads for other images that you have to buy.
Cover is a website that offers free B-roll video clips that you can download and reuse in your own projects. Most of the videos are silent and are short clips under a minute. Downloading them requires just one click. No registration is required to download from Coverr, and according to Coverr’s terms of service, attribution is not required, although it is appreciated. You can search for videos on Cover entering simple keywords like “dog” and “cat”. The other option for discovering video on Coverr is to simply browse through the themed collections of stock video clips.
open verse can be used to search for Creative Commons and public domain licensed images and audio files. The best aspect of Openverse is that it provides a clear explanation of how you can and cannot use a particular image or audio file. It also provides pre-formatted text to use when citing the source of an image or audio file. Look at this video to learn how to use Openverse to find free music for class projects.
