Dallas, Tx – National Mathematics and Science Initiative He proudly celebrates the 30th anniversary of former CEO Dr. Bernard A. Harris Jr. Historic Spacewalk. On February 9, 1995, Dr. Harris became the first African-American astronaut to walk in space during the Space Shuttle Discovery STS-63 mission. Since then, he has dedicated his life to advance in Stem education and inspire future generations.
Dr. Harris's passion for space was lit at the age of 13 when he observed Apollo 11 Moon Landing in 1969. Determined to become an astronaut, he followed titles in biology and medicine, then completing a residence in the Mayo Clinic and a Scholarship at the NASA AMES Research Center.
In 1990, Dr. Harris was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate. He flew into two missions of the space ferry: as a mission specialist at STS-55 in 1993 and as a payload commander in STS-63 in 1995. It was during the last mission that his now historic space walk made.

Advance Stem education through leadership and defense
Dr. Harris, founding member and former CEO of NMSI, has long defended the equitable access to high quality STEM education. He founded The Foundation and the Harris InstituteA non -profit organization 501 (c) (3) dedicated to the expansion of Stem opportunities for unattended students. Through initiatives such as Exxonmobil Bernard Harris Summer Science CampHis work has inspired countless young minds to explore Stem races.
In recognition of his efforts to advance Stem education, Dr. Harris received the prize for the achievement of presidential life in August 2024.
“High school is a critical moment when many students begin to doubt their potential in Stem,” said Dr. Harris. “But that was when I realized that it was my way. I hope my trip inspires young minds to remain curious, pursue Stem and create in their ability to achieve greatness. “

The need for high quality Stem education is more critical than ever, with Stem occupations that are projected to grow by almost 11% by 2031, more than double the rate of all other fields, according to the United States Labor Department.
