DoorDash added a pop-up to its app this week warning customers that orders without tips may take longer to be delivered. Seeing the message in a since-deleted tweet on X, formerly Twitter, The edge Confirmed that if you enter $0 in the tip amount in the DoorDash app while placing an order, an alert appears with the following warning, asking you to add a tip or continue without a tip:
Orders without tip may take longer to be delivered. Are you sure you want to continue? Dashers can choose which orders they want to place. Orders that Dashers take longer to accept tend to result in slower delivery.
The move appears to be an effort by DoorDash to show customers that drivers will likely prioritize more profitable work. If they don’t see a tip, they may choose not to take the job. It appears that the message is not yet available in all locations; one Edge A colleague in New Jersey got it, while another in South Carolina didn’t. (However, neither of them proceeded to place an order without a tip!)
While tipping is not something that should come as a surprise to anyone living in the United States (or should ever consider not doing it without a In fact good reason), pre-tilt It is a relatively new concept in our collaborative economy.
It’s entirely plausible that you’re planning to tip your DoorDasher in cash or that you intend to give the driver a giant tip when he arrives on time and with piping hot food or perfectly packaged groceries, something you can still do in the car. DoorDash app after delivery.
According The New York Times, the way DoorDash’s payment structure previously worked was that if a driver got a guaranteed base rate of $6.85 for an order, but the customer tipped $3, the driver would still receive $6.85. Now, it looks like a no-tip order will show up at that base rate, which DoorDash says it ranges from $2 to $10 “Depending on the estimated time, distance and convenience of the order.”
The difference is that the driver keeps the entire tip given, but without knowing they are receiving one, you can see why they would choose a $6 order (where the customer included a $4 tip) instead of a $2 order and the Hope the customer plans to tip.
TO person claiming to be a former DoorDash driver posted on “If you want to wait 1 to 2 more hours for your food, don’t add an extra dollar or two,” is his advice.
