Talking to Storj about his new version made me curious about decentralized storage. On the one hand, there are factors that could help drive its adoption. On the other, it also seems to conflict with other trends, such as sovereign clouds. This is what I learned. — Ana
Cut cloud bills
The volume of data generated by enterprises seems to be constantly increasing, but concerns about the costs of the cloud are also growing.
Earlier this month, we learned that AWS’s year-over-year revenue growth slowed in mid-January as customers looked to reduce their expenses. “As we look ahead, we expect these optimization efforts to continue to be a drag on AWS growth for at least the next two quarters,” Amazon Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky said during the company’s earnings call.
While this concern reignited the bare metal debate, it also creates tailwinds for another option: decentralized storage. Represented by the likes of Arweave, Filecoin, Internxt, Sia, and Storj, it offers a cheaper alternative to hyperscalers.
